  Introduction - New York State Census Records
The U.S. Federal Census is taken every ten years, beginning with 1790. This guide is for New York City and State censuses taken between the federal census years or made separately from the federal census. Many of the New York State census records are available on microfilm from the LDS Family History Library and can be ordered at many local Family History Centers. New York State censuses are available for some counties for 1825, 1835, 1845 and 1855, and for most counties for 1865, 1875, 1892, 1905, 1915 and 1925. The 1915 and 1925 New York State Censuses are fairly complete. Many New York State Censuses are not indexed, however there are some online indexes being created. Some of these are listed below.

New York County - Manhattan
New York County (Manhattan) is missing from most New York State censuses. However, it is included in the 1855, 1905 (includes the Bronx), 1915 and 1925 state censuses. Also, a nearly complete Manhattan census (the "police census") exists for 1890... Indexes for New York State Census Records
